Dr. John D. Byrnes

Andrews Partners with
Dr. John Byrnes

Andrews International has recently partnered with Dr. John Byrnes, the president and founder of The Center for Aggression Management®. The partnership offers Andrews a more complete solution to the problem of violence in the workplace and on campus. Whereas traditional security methods deal with issues after the fact, Dr. Byrnes' program offers an opportunity to mitigate the possibility of violence prior to its occurrence.

Dr. John D. Byrnes is a successful businessman, author and lecturer. He became interested in the subject of aggression management after concluding that there were no comprehensive training programs dedicated to preventing aggression in the workplace. Therefore, in 1993, he founded The Center for Aggression Management®, which is headquartered in Lake Mary, Florida.

Dr. Byrnes was selected by the US Department of Labor to represent the United States at the Violence as a Workplace Risk Conference held in Montreal, Canada, and has conducted seminars and workshops for some of our country's largest corporations, organizations and schools.

Dr. Byrnes authored "Before Conflict, Preventing Aggressive Behavior," and has written articles for publications such as the Wall Street Journal, the LA Times, and the Denver Post, while also appearing on radio programs across the nation.

Andrews' Donnie Anderson
Pioneers Rapid Deployment

Donnie Anderson, a 28-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and Senior Vice President of Special Events and Training for Andrews International, recognized a need to address what to do when faced with a criminal that will stop at nothing to achieve his or her goals, be it mass murder, bank robbery or other life-threatening situation.

It was clear to Anderson and his tactical team, based on field experience, that the traditional approach of waiting for formal authorization prior to shooting a perpetrator or tending to the injured prior to taking down the perpetrator were ineffective methods for handling these types of scenarios.

While still with the Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team, Anderson and his tactical team had formulated a new approach he referred to as Rapid Deployment. In order to enact the appropriate and most effective plans to minimize and/or eliminate injury in the face of an unrelenting killer, law enforcement would have to be trained to respond differently, using this method, which goes against the traditional policies of law enforcement.

Rapid Deployment entails that the first 4 officers that respond to a situation (like that of the Columbine or Virginia Tech tragedies) first find and take down the perpetrator prior to assisting the injured. It has become clear that when contending with a belligerent criminal or a cognitive aggressor, time is of the essence. The longer it takes law enforcement officials to locate and stop a perpetrator, the longer the period of time that the perpetrator has to kill more innocent victims.

During one of the most violent bank robberies in American history, Anderson put the new method to use. He responded to an emergency situation at a California branch of Bank of America in North Hollywood, and along with other responding officers, helped take down two bank robbers, armed with semi-automatic weapons and armor. Their swift action and precise tactics resulted in the deaths of both bank robbers and prevented the deaths of innocent civilians and officers.

A recent example of the effectiveness of Rapid Deployment is the shopping mall shooting in Kansas City. After killing two civilians in the shopping center parking lot, David W. Logsdon headed towards the Target store, with alleged plans to kill others. The first officers on the scene immediately entered the mall, spotted the gunman and immediately fired, fatally wounding the man and ending what might have been yet another tragic massacre.

Anderson's strategy is currently implemented by law enforcement agencies worldwide.

Andrews International Officers Locate Homicide Suspect in Hollywood Entertainment District

Homicide suspect, Ralph Garbarini, is now off the streets thanks to the quick response of three Andrews International officers. The suspect was apprehended in the Hollywood Entertainment District after officers, Stephen Seyler, Lawrence Hamblin and Charles Damiano received a tip from a concerned citizen who spotted the suspect's truck after watching the FOX television program America's Most Wanted.

"The officers' proactive response reflects their commitment and training, which led them to follow up on crucial information that easily could have been dismissed by less-experienced personnel," said Mike Harkins, director, BID Security, Andrews International.

Security Services —
Simplifying the Selection Process

Guard firms, customers seesawing between offerings and demands of one-stop-shop or specialty service provider

The era of one-stop shopping has enveloped yet another area of security: guard services. Beyond patrolling a designated site, guard companies today offer a myriad of services either related to security, such as executive protection or investigations, or in a non-security capacity, such as customer service or maintenance.

Ty Richmond, chief operating officer of Andrews International, said he has been on both sides of the equation — buying security guard services and selling them.

He said buyers of services "want as easy a process as possible. If they can find a service that they trust and get synergies, then they don't have to repeat (information) related to company culture."
