Alabama

Alabama Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The state of Alabama requires a state license for any person seeking employment as an armed security guard. There are certain requirements in the state of Alabama to qualify for an armed security guard license in order to work as an armed guard. This includes training at a state certified training facility for the amount of hours required by the state and weapons training. These requirements are:

  • Armed security guards must be at least 21 years old.
  • A valid Alabama driver’s license is required.
  • A state pistol license will be needed when applying
  • A high school diploma or an equivalency certificate
  • A written questioner must be filled out, both front and back.
  • The required amount of hours of training at a state certified facility must be completed.
  • A social security number is requested.
  • The applicant will submit to a background check.
  • The applicant will submit to fingerprinting.
  • The applicant will have no felony convictions or serious misdemeanor offenses.

The armed security guard is required to have a higher amount of training than the unarmed security guard, since they will be armed with a weapon. This due to the fact this applicant will have a greater insurance risk and have more responsibilities. The training that is needed will be done at a state certified facility and a weapons license from the state of Alabama would also be required. The training will include:

  • There will be training in legal and ethical issues.
  • Training in the state laws involving the use of force.
  • How to deal with medical emergencies including CPR.
  • How to deal with fire emergencies.
  • Weapons training, including target and marksmen training
  • Legal issues and use of force
  • Limited types of arrest
  • Detainment of suspects
  • Proper written reports

The training that will be provided at an Alabama state certified facility would prepare the armed security guard to perform duties in many different settings in the security sector. This training will also prepare the applicant to be issued an armed security guard license and a weapons license. Training will include preparing the applicant for medical and fire emergencies, detaining criminal suspects and reporting properly to authorities.

After the applicant secures the armed security guard license, they can be employed in the security sector, in many areas. Armed security guards are trained to work in:

  • State and government offices
  • Schools and colleges
  • Medical facilities
  • Libraries
  • Banks and financial institutions
  • Armored vehicles
  • Airports, bus and train stations
  • Security for housing and apartment areas
  • Private security for individuals

These are some of the areas the Alabama licensed armed security guard will find employment. The license the armed security guard carries and their weapons license will need to be renewed every four years. There will also be requirements to keep the licensing up to date with yearly refresher courses in both security training and weapons qualifications.

Alabama Unarmed Security Guards Licensing Requirements

The state of Alabama requires security guards to be licensed; this licensing includes training that must be completed prior to an Alabama unarmed security license being issued. The Alabama unarmed security licenses are issued for the amount of four years; during this time, there is a requirement for a yearly refresher course to be taken. This licensing will open up opportunities in the security sector both public and private for the unarmed security guard in the state of Alabama. There will also be other requirements that need to be fulfilled such as: 

  • The applicant must hold a high school diploma or an equivalency certification.
  • The applicant must have a valid Alabama driver’s license.
  • Any person applying for an unarmed security guard license in Alabama must be at least 18 years of age.

  • To be approved for an Alabama unarmed security guard licenses; there can be no felony convictions or certain misdemeanor offenses.

There are other types of employment in the security sector that the unarmed security guard will be qualified to fill after their state certified training and their license has been issued. In order to carry a firearm there is more extensive training required and weapons training, so that the security guard would be able to qualify for a weapons license.

Alaska

Alaska Security Guard License Requirements
In order to be eligible to receive a license, each applicant must be
  • at least 18 years of age;
  • neither addicted to nor dependent on alcohol, narcotics, or other drugs;
  • an individual without a conviction, within 10 years before the date of application, for any crime classified as a felony in this state or another jurisdiction at the time the crime was committed, unless a full pardon has been granted; and
  • not suffering from any psychopathic condition or mental illness impairing the powers of memory, reason, judgment, or perception.
  • Applicants must furnish information certifying that they meet the insurance or bond requirements specified in 13 AAC 60.120.

Upon approval of the application, a license identification card will be issued to the licensee with the form and content of the card prescribed by the licensing department. The license identification card remains the property of the state. One license identification card will be issued to each individual eligible to receive it. The licensee may not permit another individual to use or possess the license identification card.
Armed security guard license
For an armed security guard license, the requirements of an unarmed security guard must be met.  An applicant for an armed security guard license must affirm that the applicant has not been and is not now disqualified from possessing a firearm, including as a condition of probation or parole; have obtained from an instructor certified as required under 13 AAC 60.110(f) , at least eight hours of pre-assignment training in the use of firearms in compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations; handling firearms; the safety and maintenance of firearms; and demonstrate competence with any firearm that may be issued to the applicant.  If a licensee fails to maintain competence with that firearm during an annual practice firing review, that individual's license as an armed security guard is subject to revocation.

Arizona

Arizona Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The state of Arizona requires any person working as an armed security guard in the state to be licensed by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. This license requires the applicant to have training at a state certified training facility, both in security and weapons training. The state also requires other items to be submitted in order to have an application for an Arizona armed security guard license issued. These requirements are: 

  • The applicant will be at least 21 years of age.
  • The applicant will possess a high school diploma or an equivalency certification.
  • The applicant must not have been convicted of any felonies or of misdemeanor domestic violence.
  • The applicant will not have been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces
  • A background check will be completed.
  • The applicant will submit fingerprints.
  • Proof of United States citizenship must be provided.
  • The applicant should not have a history or currently have a substance abuse problem.
  • The certified armed security guard training must take place in the state of Arizona.

The training that the armed security guard is required to take prior to being issued a license in the state of Arizona will consist of eight hours of security training and sixteen hours of weapons training. When this training is successfully completed and the application is accepted the Arizona Department of Public Safety will issue an armed security guard license for two years and as long as the person is employed as an armed security guard the license must be renewed every two years prior to the expiration. The training that will be provided at the state certified training center would be:

  • Professionalism in the security environment

  • Firearm safety
  • Marksmanship

  • Arizona firearms laws

This training is required in order to prepare the armed security guard for any position, they will hold in the security sector, whether public or private. The weapon training that is required is designed to provide the confidence needed when carrying a weapon and to educate the applicant in the laws surrounding the use of firearms in the state of Arizona. Upon completion of the security training and the weapon’s training, and the other requirements are meant the application can be applied for to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The state of Arizona like most other states has certain requirements that must be meant in order to obtain an unarmed security guard license. These requirements are both personal and certified training that must be provided when the application for licensing is submitted to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The license that will be issued will be valid for a two year time period. The requirements are: 

  • The applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Proof of legal residency in the United States and citizenship is required.
  • There will be a complete background check.
  • The applicant will submit fingerprints.
  • The applicant will not have been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.
  • Applicants will not have any convictions for felonies or any domestic violence misdemeanors.
  • Applicants will have a high school diploma or an equivalency certification.
  • The unarmed security guard training must take place at a state certified facility and must be done in the state of Arizona.

The state of Arizona requires the unarmed security guard to attend eight hours training at a state certified training facility. The training will educate the applicant in the security procedures that will allow them to perform the duties of an unarmed security guard, and provide the applicant with the state certified training needed to be issued the two year unarmed security guard license in the state of Arizona.  The training will include:

  • Legal and ethical issues while on the job.
  • The limits of force allowable by Arizona laws.
  • Crowd control
  • Professionalism when dealing with the public and with legal, fire and medial personnel.

Arkansas Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The state of Arkansas has requirements that must be met prior to any person being issued an armed security guard license, these requirements are both personal and required training. The training for an armed security guard in the state of Arkansas requires more training than the unarmed guard due to the larger risk, and this includes weapon training. The training and the personal information that is required are designed to license a person that is qualified to be a professional with the ability to carry a firearm. These are the reasons why there is a required background check, fingerprints and a no felony conviction stipulation.   The Arkansas Department of Public Safety will issue the armed security guard license, which will be valid for the amount of four years with yearly refresher courses required. The requirements to apply for the armed security license in Arkansas are:

  • The applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
  • The applicant must possess a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate.
  • The appropriate state certified training will be completed.
  • A complete background check will be done.
  • The applicant will be fingerprinted.
  • The applicant will successfully pass drug testing.
  • The applicant will provide proof of citizenship or the legal right to work in the United States.
  • The applicant will not have any felony convictions on their record.

The unarmed security guard in the state of Arkansas must be licensed to work within the security sector. There are certain requirements they must fulfill in order to obtain state licensing that includes personal information and training at a state certified facility. The unarmed security guard license will be issued by the Arkansas Department of Public Safety and will be valid for four years. During the four years, the license is valid each year the applicant must take a refresher course to keep their unarmed security guard license in good standing. Colorado

Colorado Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The state of Colorado requires anyone working as an armed security guard in their state to apply for and hold a valid Colorado armed security guard license. This permits the armed security guard to work within the state in different fields of employment. The licensing in the state of Colorado is done on a city-by-city level, rather than a statewide level. This means when applying for an armed security guard license it will be applied for at the City Clerk’s office and the application fee paid at this office. The government rules that regulate the security guard in the state of Colorado is Article V, Chapter 42.
Applying for an armed security guard license means there will be a required background check, fingerprints will be submitted and other information. There will also be the need to apply for a permit to carry a gun.
The application requirements are:

  • The applicant must be at least 18 years of age
  • There will be three letters of reference submitted from non-family members
  • The applicant will need a letter of intent; this is a letter from a security company that will hire the person once they have acquired an armed security guard license. This letter will also detail their duties, the date they will be hired and the location.
  • There will be proof of a background check submitted with the application; this will be a form that is obtained from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. This form will need to be completed within 30 days of the application submission.
  • There will need to be a health certificate submitted within 60 days to show the applicant is free from any health problems that would affect their ability to perform their duties as a security guard. This certificate needs to be obtained from a licensed physician or physician assistant.
  • The make, model and license number of any personal vehicle that will be used for work purposes.
  • A valid Colorado driver’s license or a valid Colorado State identification card.
  • A valid social security card number will be submitted when applying for a Colorado armed security guard license.

In the state of Colorado there are regulations about the weapons a security guard is allowed to carry, this includes a knife with a blade that is less than 3 ½ inches long, a single canister of mace or similar compound. The mace is only permitted to be used in protecting the security guard or another person from injury or harm. It may also be used to prevent the commission of a felony.
The security guard is permitted to carry a nightstick on a duty belt, and the nightstick must not be longer than 26 inches in length and no more than 1 ½ in diameter. The security guard that carries a nightstick will take and pass an 8 hour training course to be educated how to use the nightstick and the effect it will have when used on another person. The security guard that carries a nightstick will only use it to prevent injury, protect another person or stop the commission of a felony.
Security guards that cause injury during their duty with the use of physical force or cause the injury with any weapon will submit a written report in complete detail of the incident to the Department of Excise and Licenses within 3 days.
The training the armed security guard has available to them will make the job a stress free environment, because the education received during training will prepare armed security guards to handle different types of situations.

Colorado Unarmed Security Guards Licensing Requirements

The state of Colorado requires people employed as a security guard to apply and hold a valid security guard license during the duration of their employment. There are requirements that must be met to obtain a security guard license and will be applied for at the City Clerk’s Office, the application will be accompanied with the proper documentation and fee.
In the State of Colorado the licensing of the unarmed security guard is done on a city level, rather than a state level. The licensing is governed by Colorado Article V Chapter 42, which outlines the requirements to obtain the unarmed guard license. These requirements include:

  • The applicant will be at least 18 years old.
  • They will be a resident of Colorado.
  • They will be a citizen or legal resident of the United States.
  • They will have a valid photo ID, either a valid Colorado driver’s license or a Colorado state identification card.
  • A valid social security number.
  • Fingerprints will be submitted and a complete FBI style background check
  • A health certificate by a licensed physician or physician’s assistant will be submitted that is within 60 days of the application. This certificate will show there are no medical conditions that will affect the unarmed security guards duties.

In the state of Colorado there are weapons regulations about the different types of weapons that can be used by the security guard; these include a knife, mace and a nightstick.

  • Knife: The unarmed security guard in the state of Colorado will not carry a knife that is more than 3 ½ inches.
  • Knight sticks will not be longer than 26 inches and no more than 1 ½ inches in diameter. There is a requirement for the security guard that carries a night stick to take an 8 hour training course in the use of the weapon and the effects it can have when used.
  • Mace: The use of mace is permitted in the state of Colorado, to protect the security guard or a third person. Mace is also permitted to be used to stop the commission of a felony. The regulation for the security guard carrying mace is one canister of mace or similar compound.

When force is used with a weapon in the state of Colorado a written report of the indecent must be filed with the Department of Excise and Licenses within 3 days.
The unarmed security guard training will educate the person in a variety of skills; these will prepare the guard to handle different situations that can occur while working in the security field. It will also train them in dealing with authorities, emergency situations and the public.

Connecticut

Connecticut Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The state of Connecticut has requirements for any person that would like to work in the security sector as an armed security guard. These requirements must be met prior to being issued a state license; they will be personal requirements and training requirements. The training and other requirements are found in the Connecticut Department of Public Safety Division of State Police Special Licensing and Firearms Unit, Chapter 534 section 29 through 161. These regulations specify anyone working as a security guard in the state of Connecticut will be certified and have a license issued. The requirements for training for the armed security officer are thirty hours that include weapon’s training. The personal requirements are:

  • The applicant must be at least 21 years of age
  • Possess a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate
  • Applicants will submit to an FBI style background check
  • Applicants will be fingerprinted
  • Applicants will complete the hours of certified training
  • Applicants will pass a written exam satisfactorily
  • Applicants will give proof they can be employed in the United States
  • There will be no felony or serious misdemeanor charges or conviction in the criminal history of the person applying for an armed security guard license.

The training for the licensed armed security guard must be completed at a state approved facility that include, the course material specified by the Commissioner of Public Safety in accordance with the statutes. The course must be at least eight hours of training in the security field and are outlined as follows:

  • Introduction to security
  • Basic first aid, this includes recognizing emergencies and prioritizing care.
  • Search and seizure, this will include citizen’s arrests, the Fourth Amendment rights, and other relevant statutes.
  • The use of force
  • Basic criminal justice including Constitution, statutes, case law and regulations
  • Public safety issues
  • Threat response, hazardous emergencies and terrorism
  • There will be a written exam that must be passed with at least a 70% score
  • Weapons training will include marksmanship, target practice
  • The Connecticut laws for use of deadly force

This training is to prepare the armed security guard to work confidently in the security sector and to be issued a Connecticut armed security guard license. The training provided will enable the applicant to deal with emergencies competently and within the parameters of the law.
In the state of Connecticut, there are many different employment opportunities for the licensed armed security guard, these can include:

Connecticut Unarmed Security Guards Licensing Requirements

The state of Connecticut issues licenses to people that have completed the requirements that are included in the statutes Chapter 534 section 29 through 161. These statutes and the licensing fall under the Connecticut Department of Public Safety Division of State Police Special Licensing and Firearms Unit. The requirements include personal information, required training and a written exam. The Connecticut Department of Public Safety will issue the unarmed security guard license after the completion of the requirements has been fulfilled, along with the written application to apply for the license. The personal requirements are: 

  • The applicant for an unarmed security license must be at least 18 years of age
  • A high school diploma or equivalency certification is needed
  • An FBI style background check will be done
  • The applicant will provide fingerprints
  • Proof of the legal ability to work in the United States
  • The applicant will not have any felony charges or convictions in their criminal history or serious misdemeanors
  • The applicant will have passed a written training exam with at least a 70 percent grade

To meet these requirements and be issued a Connecticut unarmed security guard license the applicant is required to attend a state certified facility. This training course is an eight-hour course that has curriculum approved by the Commissioner of Public Safety to prepare the applicant for employment as a licensed unarmed security guard. This course will include:

  • The introduction to security
  • Basic first aid that will include recognizing the emergency and how to prioritize care
  • Search and seizure that will include the Forth Amendment and relevant statutes
  • Use of force and Connecticut laws
  • Basic criminal justice that includes case law, statutes, regulations and the Constitution
  • Public safety
  • Terrorism, threat response and hazardous emergencies
  • The written exam, this must be passed with at least a 70 percent

This training is designed by the Commissioner of Public Safety to prepare the unarmed security guard to work efficiently and competently in the security sector. The training enables the person to handle emergencies, criminal activity and other employment related duties.

Delaware

Delaware Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The unarmed and armed security guard is required to be licensed in the state of Delaware, they are required to provide personal information and to take a state certified training course prior to being issued a license. The unarmed and armed security guard license will be valid for five years from the date it was issued.

UNARMED

Anyone who wishes to be licensed, under this Chapter, as a noncommissioned security guard, must meet and maintain the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony
  • Must not have been convicted of any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving the act of theft
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving drug offenses
  • If served in the armed forces, must not have been discharged other than honorable conditions
  • Must not be a member or employee of any law enforcement organization, as defined by the Council of Police Training
  • Must meet and maintain the qualifications set and approved by the Board of Examiners

ARMED

Anyone who wishes to be licensed as an armed security guard, under this chapter, must meet the same qualifications as a security guard with the following exceptions:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age;
  • Must meet and maintain the qualifications set and approved by the Board of Examiners.

Florida

Florida Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The job of an armed security guard in the state of Florida is an important position, protecting properties from illegal crimes, theft, fire, vandalism and even terrorism. To be an armed security guard in this state, there is specific training that will need to be done, this includes training in firearms and other job related skills. There will also be training in legal issues that could arise on the job and filling out reports properly.
To perform the duties required of the armed security guard a Florida Class G license must be obtained. Classroom training must be taken at a certified training facility in accordance to Florida States Statutes Section 493, 790 and 775.
The training to hold a Class G license in the state of Florida includes:

This license is issued by the Florida State Department of Agriculture and the trained armed security guard will receive their permanent card 60 to 90 days after the application has been submitted.
The person applying for a state Class G license in compliance with Florida statutes 493.6106, this also includes 744.331, which states there must not be adjudicated incapacitated in the state of Florida or any other state. Chronic or habitual alcohol use, or been found guilty of a controlled substance or committed for controlled substance abuse is included in the statutes.
This Class G license entitles the armed security guard to work in different locations, including:

This type of position is one that will often require drug testing that might be ongoing during the entire time of employment. These positions often require valid Florida state drivers license.
The armed security does not need specific educational requirements other than the certified training course and a high school diploma or an equivalency certification. This is attractive to prior military personnel who has gotten out of the military or has retired from a career in the military.
State Licensing Application

Florida Unarmed Security Guards Licensing Requirements

The state of Florida like many other states has certain requirements that must be met prior to working as an unarmed security guard. In order to obtain the unarmed security guard license in this state a specific class must be taken to qualify for the Class D License, which qualifies a person in the state of Florida to work as an unarmed security guard.
The training for an unarmed security guard, should also include learning to observe, writing detailed reports, self-defense, and the procedure used to detain suspected violators. Other types of training are also required and are provided within the certified training courses.
The D License requires forty hours of classes in security training and must be taken from a certified facility. The training provided will include:

In order to obtain the unarmed security guard license the requirements of Florida State Statutes section 493 (ss. 439.6201 through 493.6203) must be met. These include:

  • Provide a full set of fingerprints
  • They must be legal to work in the United States.
  • Sign a personal inquiry waiver to allow the department to conduct necessary background checks.

When the unarmed security guard license qualifications have been met the Florida Class D Security license can be applied for and the process will include finger printing, a security guard photo ID and notarization of the license application.
A temporary card will be issued that will permit the applicant to be employed as a licensed unarmed security guard until the permanent unarmed security guard license is received from the state of Florida. This can be between 60 and 90 days when the permanent Class D license is issued.

Georgia Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

Hawaii

Hawaii Security Guard Licensing Requirements

Hawaii has complicated and stringent standards. Obtaining a security guard license in Hawaii requires previous experience, cash up front, studying for exams and gathering lots of necessary paperwork. It's nearly as time-consuming and strict as becoming a police officer. Here's what you need to know.

  • Graduate from high school or get a GED. Bring proof with you when you apply. Hawaii requires this and that you be at least 18 years old.
  • Have at least four verifiable years of experience as a security guard. To get your license and command more money, you must first work under a licensed guard or guard agency, as a guard for a private employer, as a police officer or as a guard for any government entity. Many people get experience in other states first.
  • Fill out the 17-page security guard application, available in the Resources section. There is a deadline every two months for this application. Call 808-586-3000 and request that application forms be mailed, if you prefer.
  • Get a fingerprint check through the FBI.
  • Get criminal abstracts from every county where you have lived during the past decade.
  • Pay the $50 application fee, plus other miscellaneous license and fingerprint fees that vary depending on the time of year you make your application and how you submit the fingerprints.
  • Be in good physical and mental health and have no criminal convictions.
  • Take and pass a test administered by the Board of Private Detectives and Guards, after your application is reviewed and approved.

Kansas Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The state of Kansas requires any person that wants to be employed as an armed security guard to apply for a Kansas state armed security guard license. In order to apply for this license the person applying will need to attend state certified courses and also provide personal information. The Kansas armed security guard license is regulated by the State Attorney General’s Office, the licensing provisions are included in Act K.S.A. 75-7b and the Kansas Administrative Regulations statutes for armed and unarmed security guards. The personal information that is required include:

  • The applicant will be at least 21 years of age
  • Applicants will provide proof they can legally work in the United States
  • The applicant will submit to a background check
  • The applicant will be fingerprinted
  • Applicants will not have been convicted of any felonies or certain misdemeanors

The training that is required by the legislative Act K.S.A. 7507b and the Kansas Administrative Regulations statutes must be completed in the state of Kansas and at a state certified facility. This training will include courses that will prepare the applicant to work in the security field during normal duties and in emergency situations. This training will include:

  • Ethical issues and the Kansas law
  • Emergency medical including first aid
  • The use of force
  • Firearm’s training including marksmanship and target practice

The applicant that fulfills all of the requirements to apply for their Kansas armed guard license will be qualified to work in both the public and private security field. This license creates many employment opportunities such as:

These requirements are pursuant to the legislative Act K.S.A. 75-b and the Kansas Administrative Regulations statutes that apply to the unarmed security guard. The unarmed security licensing is regulated by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office and prior to applying for the license all requirements must be met. The training is to be done within the state of Kansas at a state certified training center to prepare the unarmed security guard to work within the security field. The personal requirements must be met or the security license will not be issued. The personal requirements to apply for the unarmed security license are:

  • The applicant must be at least 18 years of age
  • Proof of a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate
  • Proof of the legal right to work in the United States
  • A complete background check will be done
  • The applicant will not have any felony convictions or certain misdemeanor convictions

Maryland

Maryland Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The position of an armed security guard in Maryland while important is also one that requires licensing that will open job positions in many different areas. This is an employment position where the armed security guard is able to protect property from theft, vandalism, and even terrorism after completing the required training.
The opportunities for employment in this field include hospitals, schools, local government offices and other business settings. There are some stipulations that must be followed to apply for an armed security guard license, including submitting to finger printing and a criminal background check as per code 29.04.01.00.

Nevada

Nevada Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The requirements for the state of Nevada armed security guard are an 11-hour education training course and firearms training. The Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board oversees the Nevada armed security licensing. This training will include the education to prepare the armed security guard to work in any of the settings where this type of employee is needed. The training will enable the person to be control of situations that require professionalism, including medical emergencies and crowd control.
The requirements to work in the security sector are, the person must be 21 years of age, they have completed the 11-hour training at a certified training facility and the firearm’s training. There are 6 hours required for classroom training concerning laws and liability in order to obtain a Nevada state armed security license.
It is possible in the state of Nevada to work within a private security industry like the private security staffs of casinos. This does not require the state license to be applied for, but it does require the amount of training specified by the state. It will require the 11 hours of classroom training for firearms and the 3 hours required by the state in range training with weapons. The requirements that will need to be met will be:

  • The armed security guard will need to be at least 21 years of age.
  • A high school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • They will be required to provide valid photo identification that is not expired.
  • The applicant will submit to fingerprinting.
  • Information for the Internal Revenue Service will be provided.

The training education at a certified facility will prepare the armed security guard to work within the security industry and will give them the confidence to handle situations that arise while on duty. The positions that can be held by the Nevada armed security officer can be in medium or high risk areas of the security industry. The 11 hours of classroom training will include:

  • Defusing situations
  • Emergency medical including CPR
  • Properly writing reports
  • Detaining criminals
  • Firearm training, including marksmanship and targets

The required firearm training will include classroom education and range time for the person applying for an armed security guard license. This training consists of 8 hours of classroom training and three hours of using weapons on the range. This must be completed in order to obtain the certification to carry a firearm in the state of Nevada and to satisfy the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board.
In order to work in casinos, there is also a license that must be obtained from the sheriff’s office in compliance with Nevada state law, after training is completed both in the classroom and firearms training. The firearm’s licensing will need a 1-hour refresher course every 6 months for the applicant to stay current on their licensing qualifications.

Nevada like other states has some requirements for the person that wants to work as an unarmed security guard. This person must satisfy the requirements that have been put in place by the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board in order to obtain a license.
Where the rules differ in Nevada than in other states is casinos are able to provide their own certified training courses for their security force. When an unarmed security guard works in a casino they will also need to obtain a security license from the sheriff’s office along with their Nevada state license. In either case, the qualifications will still need to be fulfilled. The state requires that the unarmed security guard applicant applying to the state or to the sheriff’s office will comply with the set guidelines that are in place by the state of Nevada.
The qualifications needed to apply for a Nevada unarmed security guard license:

  • The applicant must be at least 21 years of age
  • The applicant will need to have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate.
  • Applicants are legal to work in the United States

New Hampshire Security Guard License Requirements

The Permits and Licensing Unit performs background checks on individuals applying for pistol permits, private investigator licenses, security guard licenses and fireworks permits. New Jersey

New Jersey Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The state of New Jersey requires anyone seeking employment in the security sector as a licensed armed security guard must successfully complete all the required steps prior to having a license issued under the New Jersey State Police, Private Detective Unit and the Security Officer Registration Act, N.J.S.A. US: 19A-1 to 45:19A-12. In order to be issued an armed security license in the state all requirements; both personal and training must be completed prior to being issued a permanent license in the state.
The first of the requirements is that applicants must be at least 18 years of age when applying for their New Jersey armed security guard license. The applicant obtaining a New Jersey armed security license will be required to renew it every two years as long as they are employed in the security sector. The New Jersey State Police, Private Detective Unit will issue the permanent armed security guard license within 90 days from the date the applicant applied and is employed as an armed security guard. New Jersey requires that applicants take eight hours of certified training each year to keep their security license current and able to be renewed. The other requirements are:

  • The applicant will submit a valid photo ID that includes a valid expiration date.
  • The applicant must attend a twenty-four hour course at a certified training facility

The Security Officer Registration Act requires holding an armed security guard license and this includes 24 hours of education at a New Jersey state certified training center. The amount of training hours in New Jersey is twenty-four hours of security education that will include:

The education in the training course is designed to prepare the New Jersey unarmed security guard with the confidence to work in the security sector with professionalism. The student will also learn to properly write reports and proper interaction with official authorities. Classes will include emergency techniques to be used for medical emergencies until emergency medical technicians arrive and fire safety.
This training prepares the applicant to work within certain security sectors that can include:

  • Malls
  • Apartments and hotels

These are some of the employment opportunities for the licensed unarmed guard in New Jersey, which the certified training has prepared the applicant. When working in a setting such as a casino or office building, the duties can include the use of cameras to monitor activities within the building. The unarmed security guard can also be employed in buildings that have alarm security systems.

The license is good for a period of two years, with a required refresher certified course taken yearly to keep the unarmed security guard license current. The training and license renewal must be done prior to the expiration date of the current security license.  When this yearly training is not completed the unarmed security guard license will not be valid or renewed, disabling the applicant to continue working in the security sector.

New Mexico

New Mexico Security Guard

The following documents must be submitted for level 1, 2 and 3 Security Guard applications for registration:

  • Certification of completing the required department approved training program.
  • Level 2 and Level 3 applicants must include a copy of their high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Declaration of Conviction signed and notarized.
  • Authorization for Release of Information, Department of Public Safety, signed and notarized.
  • Two recent 2” x 2” “passport type” photos stapled onto the front page of the application. Do not use tape or paste.
  • Copy of any background or reference information obtained by your employer.
  • Two completed fingerprint cards (cards must be obtained from the board office) and Finger Print Certificate form.
  • Application fee of $15 and background fee of $29.95. All fees are to be payable to the Private Investigations Advisory Board and are non-refundable.

Level 1 Registration requirements:
The department shall issue a registration for a level one security guard to an individual who submits satisfactory evidence that the applicant:

  • is at least 18 years of age;
  • is of good moral character;
  • has successfully completed an examination to be administered by the department;
  • has not been convicted of a felony or an offense involving dishonesty, an offense involving an intentional violent act or the illegal use or possession of a deadly weapon and has not been found to have violated professional ethical standards;
  • has completed a department approved training program prior to being placed on a guard post for the first time as a level one security guard
  • is employed by a private patrol company under the direct supervision of a licensed private patrol operator, a level three security guard or a private patrol operations manager.

Level 2 Registration requirements:
The department shall issue a registration for a level two security guard to an individual who submits satisfactory evidence that the applicant:

  • is at least 18 years of age;
  • is of good moral character;
  • possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent;
  • has successfully completed an examination to be administered by the department;
  • has not been convicted of a felony or an offense involving dishonesty, an offense involving an intentional violent act or the illegal use or possession of a deadly weapon and has not been found to have violated professional ethical standards;

New York

New York Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

In the state of New York like many other states there is a required amount of training hours in a certified training facility. This training that is required in New York is 8 hours general training, 16 hours of job related training and 47 hours to carry a firearm. The New York Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety, sets these requirements for armed security training.
Licensing is overseen by the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services. The occupational codes for the armed and unarmed security guard in the state of New York is 33-9032 and penal code 400.00.The requirements to be a licensed security guard in this state are:

  • The applicant must be 18 years of age
  • No serious criminal offense convictions
  • The applicant must complete the amount of requested training hours
  • The applicant must successfully complete 47 hours of firearm training
  • Fingerprints will be required
  • An FBI style background check
  • Hold a New York state pistol license

The state of New York requires that there will be an eight-hour in-service annual training course taken yearly in order to hold the New York armed security guard license. The sixteen hour on the job training required must be done within a sixty-day time limit. The only applicants that are exempt from training are police officers, which are active duty and certain other officials. The armed security guard license is valid for two years after receiving the permanent license, as long as the required eight hour per year training course is completed. This is required as long as the applicant holds a New York armed security guard license.
Applicants in the state, which completed their training at a certified facility including training in firearms and deadly physical force prior to being hired as an armed security guard are required to take the eight-hour training course a second time. This must be done prior to applying for their New York state licensing. This also includes the required background check and fingerprinting in order to be issued a permanent state security license.
Training at a certified facility will include materials and training to prepare the applicant to perform the duties of an armed security guard in many industries. This training includes:

  • Legal issues
  • Crowd control
  • Emergency medical including CPR
  • Emergency fire training
  • Firearms training, target and marksmanship
  • Homeland security and counter terrorism training

New York Unarmed Security Guards Licensing Requirements

In the state of New York to obtain an unarmed security guard license there set regulations by the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety. These regulations in statute 33-9032 state that the unarmed security guard will need eight hours of training at a certified training center and then will need sixteen hours of on the job training.
The New York State Department of State Division of Licensing Services, issues the unarmed security guard license and the license is issued after the requirements are met, as well as fingerprinting and the background check. The permanent license when issued will need to be renewed every two years. The New York State Department of Licensing Services will also require proof each year that the applicant has taken an eight-hour training course at a certified facility. These requirements to obtain a license include completing the specified amount of training along with others:

  • The person applying for a New York state unarmed security license must be at least 18 years of age.
  • They will submit to fingerprinting
  • Submit to an FBI style background check
  • Have no convictions for serious crimes or felonies
  • Their eight hours of certified training and sixteen hours of on the job training must be completed.

The training for the unarmed security guard will help the person taking the course to be prepared in emergency situations and in dealing with the public. This includes the legal implications that could arise in some situations. This training makes it possible for the unarmed security guard to stop criminal activity without alarming the general public, handling medical emergencies until paramedics arrive and reporting to official agencies in a professional manner. The training will include written reports that will need to be used in daily work assignments and when making reports for interaction with fire and police departments. The sixteen hours of on the job training are to train the applicant in the environment they will be working in and the methods of security will be used.
The trained and licensed unarmed security guard is qualified for employment in several different types of employment in the state of New York. These include retail stores, libraries, apartment buildings, hotels, and other public places.
In cases where the unarmed security guard has not been employed for an extended amount of time and when hired receives the sixteen hours of on the job training. The eight-hour training course is required by the state to taken again prior to being issued a New York state unarmed security license. This eight-hour course will also need to be taken annually in order to keep the unarmed security license up to date; this includes years the license does not need to be renewed in the state of New York.

North Carolina

North Carolina Armed Security Guard License Requirements

Applicants for an armed security guard registration shall meet all the minimum requirements for the unarmed security guard.

Each armed security guard employer shall submit and sign an application form for the registration of each armed security guard applicant to the Board.  This form shall be accompanied by:

  • two sets of classifiable fingerprints on an applicant fingerprint card;
  • two head and shoulders color photographs of the applicant sufficient quality for identification, one inch by one inch in size;
  • a certified statement of the result of a criminal records search from the clerk of superior court in each county where the applicant has resided within the immediate preceding 48 months.  If the applicant has resided out of state within the immediate preceding 48 months, the applicant shall provide a certified statement of the result of a criminal records search from the appropriate governmental authority housing criminal record information in each area where the applicant has resided within the immediate preceding 48 months;
  • the applicant's non-refundable registration fee
  • a statement signed by a certified trainer that the applicant has successfully completed the training requirements of 12 NCAC 07D .0807
  • a certification by the applicant that he or she is at least 21 years of age.

Applicants for an armed security guard firearm registration permit shall complete a basic training course for armed security guards which consists of at least 20 hours of classroom instruction including:

  • legal limitations on the use of handguns and on the powers and authority of an armed security guard, including familiarity with rules and regulations relating to armed security guards (minimum of four hours);
  • handgun safety, including range firing procedures (minimum of one hour);
  • handgun operation and maintenance (minimum of three hours);
  • handgun fundamentals (minimum of eight hours); and
  • night firing (minimum of four hours).

Applicants for an armed security guard firearm registration permit shall attain a score of at least 80 percent accuracy on a firearms range qualification course adopted by the Board and the Attorney General, a copy of which is on file in the Director's office.  Should a student fail to attain a score of 80 percent accuracy as referenced above, the student will be given an additional three attempts to qualify on the course of fire they did not pass.  Failure to meet the qualification after three attempts shall require the student to repeat the entire Basic Training Course for Armed Security Guards.  All additional attempts must take place within 20 days of the completion of the initial 20-hour course.

All armed security guard training required by 12 NCAC 07D shall be administered by a certified trainer and shall be successfully completed no more than 90 days prior to the date of issuance of the armed security guard firearm registration permit.

All applicants for an armed security guard firearm registration permit must obtain training under the provisions of this Section using their duty weapon and their duty ammunition or ballistic equivalent ammunition, to include lead-free ammunition that meets the same point of aim, point of impact, and felt recoil of the duty ammunition, for all weapons.
 
The armed security officer is required to qualify annually both day and night.  If the security officer fails to qualify on either course of fire, the security officer cannot carry a firearm until such time as they meet the qualification requirements.

Fees for armed security guard firearm registration permits are as follows:

  • thirty dollars ($30.00) non‑refundable initial registration fee;
  • thirty dollars ($30.00) annual renewal, or reissue fee; and
  • fifteen dollar ($15.00) application fee.

Fees shall be paid in the form of a check or money order made payable to the Private Protective Services Board.

North Carolina Unarmed Security Guard License Requirements

An applicant for registration shall:

  • be at least 18 years of age;
  • be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien;
  • be of good moral character and temperate habits. 
  • not have been declared by any court of competent jurisdiction incompetent by reason of mental disease or defect; or not have been involuntarily committed to an institution for treatment of mental disease or defect by a district court judge. 
  • not have had a revocation of a registration.

Each employer shall submit and sign an application form for the registration of each employee to the Board.  This form shall be accompanied by:

  • two sets of classifiable fingerprints on an applicant fingerprint card;
  • two recent head and shoulders color photographs of the applicant of acceptable quality for identification, one inch by one inch in size;
  • certified statement of the result of a criminal records search from the appropriate governmental authority housing criminal record information or clerk of superior court in each area where the applicant has resided within the immediate preceding 48 months;
  • the applicant's non-refundable registration fee; and
  • actual cost charged to the Private Protective Services Board by the State Bureau of Investigation to cover the cost of criminal record checks performed by the State Bureau of Investigation, collected by the Private Protective Services Board.

Applicants for an unarmed security guard registration shall complete a basic training course for unarmed security guards within 30 days from the date of permanent hire.  The course shall consist of a minimum of 16 hours of classroom instruction including:

  • The Security Officer in North Carolina -- (minimum of one hour);
  • Legal Issues for Security Officers -- (minimum of three hours);
  • Emergency Response -- (minimum of three hours);
  • Communications -- (minimum of two hours);
  • Patrol Procedures -- (minimum of three hours);
  • Note Taking and Report Writing -- (minimum of three hours);
  • Deportment -- (minimum of one hour).
  • A minimum of four hours of classroom instruction shall be completed within 20 calendar days of a probationary or regular security guard being placed on a duty station. 

Fees for unarmed security guards are as follows:

  • thirty dollar ($30.00) non‑refundable initial registration fee;
  • thirty dollar ($30.00) annual renewal, or reissue fee;
  • fifteen dollar ($15.00) transfer fee; and
  • twenty-five dollars ($25.00) late renewal fee to be paid within 90 days from the date the registration expires and to be paid in addition to the renewal fee.

Fees shall be paid in the form of a check or money order made payable to the Private Protective Services Board.

Pennsylvania Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The state of Pennsylvania requires anyone applying for an armed security guard license to meet the qualification standards set by the state and comply with the Private Detective Act of 1953 including the amendments that have been made. One of the amendments that have been made is that one copy of the application will be filed with the Clerk of Courts.
The other requirements to qualify for the Pennsylvania security guard license for the armed guard will be to attend training classes for 40 hours, attend firearm’s classes and the other requirements are:

  • The applicant must be at least 18 years of age
  • The person applying will have a high school diploma or equivalency exam
  • The applicant will provide valid photo identification
  • Applicants are either a U.S. citizen or are allowed to work in the United States
  • The applicant will submit to fingerprinting that will be filed with the Pennsylvania State Police Central Repository
  • Background checks well be conducted by the District Attorneys Office and the Clerk of Courts

The state of Pennsylvania requires the person applying for an armed security guard license to take 40 hours of training at a certified training facility. There is also a requirement for firearm’s training and range time. The classroom training will include education to help the person perform their duties as a licensed armed security guard with confidence and safety. The training in the classroom for firearms will include the legal issues and there is mandatory time spent at the range. In the state of Pennsylvania the armed security guard in training is required to comply with the Lethal Weapons Training Act. The armed security guard will train with a 38-caliber gun, shooting 50 rounds and train using a shotgun. The range training will include marksman and target training to ensure the armed guard that will be license has experience with weapons. This provides a safe environment for the person or public, the applicant is providing protection.  The certification for firearms is valid for five years, with yearly eight-hour refresher courses taken.

The person that will apply for an unarmed security guard license in the state of Pennsylvania will need to fulfill the requirements of the state. These requirements when completed, the fingerprints and background check is done, the person is then able to apply for a Pennsylvania unarmed security license. Unarmed security guards in the state of Pennsylvania do not require the same amount of insurance as the armed security guard. The qualifications that will need to be met include being at least 18 years of age. The other qualifications that will need to be met are:

  • The applicant will be a U.S. citizen or legally be able to work in the United States
  • Applicants will have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate
  • A valid photo identification is needed and will be submitted to the Clerk of Courts
  • The applicant will submit to fingerprints that will be filed with the Pennsylvania State Police Central Repository
  • Applicants will submit to a criminal background check that will be done by the Clerk of Courts and the District Attorneys Office

The other requirements to qualify for the unarmed security guard license in the state of Pennsylvania is the 40 hour training course to be taken at a state certified training center. This is a classroom environment, which will prepare the person to work in the security sector competently and safely. Training will include teaching the unarmed security guard medical emergency CPR and to communicate with medical emergency technicians.  The training will include classes in:

  • Fire emergency

The person training to become a licensed unarmed security guard will meet the qualifications to apply for the license after successfully completing the 40 hours of training. This person will then find work in the security industry at places such as:

The trained Pennsylvania unarmed security guard is able to work in environments that have cameras and alarm systems that need to be monitored. This person is qualified to protect retail stores from theft and shoplifting and protect schools from unauthorized entry. All of the documentation, the fingerprints and proof of training will be submitted to the Clerk of Courts, along with the petition for an unarmed security guard license. The paperwork will then go to the District Attorneys Office where the license will be issued, after review.
The Pennsylvania unarmed security guard license guidelines are included in the Private Detective Act of 1953, as well as the amendments that have been attached to the act. The license when issued after completing the requirements, which are needed to apply for the license, will be valid for two years from the date of issue. This unarmed security guard license will need to be held as long as the person is working in the security sector in the state of Pennsylvania.

South Carolina

South Carolina Security Guard License

Security Guard Registrations are issued by SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) and are valid for one year from date of issue. Persons holding commissions or appointments that confer law enforcement authority and administrative employees of public law enforcement agencies may not hold private security registrations. Officers of the South Carolina Department of Corrections who hold limited-authority law enforcement commissions, as defined by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, are exempt from this restriction for purposes of employment as private security officers.

Required fees must be received with the application form and must be in the form of a valid business check, cashier check or money order.   The following fees are applicable and are non-refundable:
 
Private Security Officer Registration

  • Armed: $110.00 annually
  • Unarmed: $65.00 annually
  • Replacement-lost or destroyed card: $20.00

Each candidate for registration as a private security officer must qualify by successfully completing a basic training course approved by SLED. The standard basic training course consists of four or more hours of training by a certified private security company training officer and must consist of the latest material provided to the trainer by the South Carolina Technical College Private Security Training School.  Such basic training must be completed; a written examination administered and scored, accurate results of the testing documented in the employer’s files, and application for registration received by SLED before the security officer begins duties at a client site.  A candidate who successfully completes such basic training will, upon issuance of a registration card by SLED, be designated as a Registered Private Security Officer. The security officer must complete an additional minimum two hours of orientation and training by a certified company-training officer.

Armed Security Guard

In addition to the training required, a private security officer who will be authorized to carry a firearm must, before being issued, authorized or permitted to carry a firearm on duty, successfully complete a course approved by SLED, consisting of a minimum of four hours of training by a private security company certified training officer or law enforcement firearms instructor currently certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, in the safe and proper use of the specific type(s) of firearm(s) to be issued or carried.  Such training must:

  • Adhere to the lesson plan(s) and course(s) of fire provided by the South Carolina Technical College Private Security Training School, and
  • Include a demonstration of the safe and competent use of the firearm on a range supervised and documented by a private security company certified training officer or law enforcement firearms instructor currently certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

South Dakota

South Dakota Armed Security Guard Licensing Requirements

The South Dakota armed security guard is not licensed by the state, the person working in the security industry must possess a valid firearms permit to carry a weapon while on duty. This does not mean that the armed security guard does not need training and education to perform their duties correctly and safely.
Anyone working in the security industry benefits from training and education, this allows them to handle any situation that might arise confidently and prepares them to work with the authorities. The permit to carry a weapon is SDCL 22-14-11 and this permit is valid for the amount of 4 years.
There are some requirements that must be met in order to obtain a firearms permit to carry a concealed weapon, this includes:

  • Providing false information can be denied a permit
  • The person must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • The person has never been convicted of a felony or crime of violence or pled nolo contendere.
  • The person has not been a danger to himself or others for an amount of at least 10 years.
  • The applicant has had no convictions of the unlawful use of weapons
  • The applicant has not been convicted either misdemeanor or felony of controlled substances including marijuana within the past 5 years.
  • The applicant is not under indictment, or a fugitive

The unarmed security guard is required in the state of Washington to obtain a license to work in the security field as an unarmed security guard. The license also means opportunity to work within the security field in a variety of job placements.
The licensing process means filling out a Washington state unarmed security guard license application this application will also have other requirements including:

  • The applicant will need to be at least 21 years of age
  • The applicant will need to be a resident of the state of Washington
  • A valid Washington state driver’s license or state photo identification card will be needed
  • The applicant will submit a fingerprint card
  • There will be a criminal background check

The requirements once met for the application and submitted with the proper fee will entitle the unarmed security guard to work in many different areas where security is needed. The security guard training that is available will prepare the unarmed security guard to work within the field. The training will include education in skills such as:

  • Working with other security professionals, including police and fire officials.
  • Training in legal and ethical issues
  • Training in medical emergencies and can include CPR
  • The amount of force that can be used
  • The legal detainment of suspects
  • Properly written reports

The training for the unarmed security guard that is provided at a certified training center enables the person to work within the security field and prepares them for any type of situation that might occur during their duty hours. The skills they have and education will prepare the unarmed security guard to work within the security field. The positions that the unarmed guard will be prepared to work in are:

  • Airports, bus and train stations
  • Schools, colleges and universities
  • Malls and retail locations
  • State and government offices
  • Private office buildings
  • Financial institutions
  • Housing and apartment areas

This is some of the locations where the Washington unarmed security guard is able to find employment, for which they have the skill and training to protect the building and public. The licensing will need to be kept current the entire time that the unarmed security guard is employed in the security sector. There will not be a requirement for the unarmed security guard to carry a firearm and they will not need a firearms license.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin Security Guard License

An applicant for a permit as a private security person may be granted a permit, if the applicant:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Subject to ss.111.321, 111.322 and 111.335, Stats., does not have an arrest or conviction record involving a misdemeanor or a violation, as defined in s. 440.26(4m), Wisc. Stats.
  • Has not been convicted in this state or elsewhere of a felony, unless pardoned.
  • Is not a user of drugs or alcohol to an extent dangerous to the applicant or others or to an extent which would impair the applicant's ability to responsibly perform private security activities.
  • Does not have a physical, emotional or mental condition that might adversely affect the applicant's ability to responsible perform private security activities.
  • Digital fingerprints are required
  • Complete the Application for Private Security Permit (form #2271) and all required documentation.  

Your completed application, fee, Authorization for Release of FBI Information (form #2687), and a recent photograph of your head and shoulders must be submitted to the Department within 14 days after submission of your fingerprints. If there is no criminal background history and all supporting documents have been submitted, a private security permit will be issued.  If the search reveals a criminal background, the applicant will be requested to submit further information or a Notice of Denial will be sent as appropriate.

A separate permit must be obtained in order to carry a firearm (see Firearm Permit).

Firearms Permit - Licensing

To apply for a Firearms Permit, applicant must complete the required application and all required documents for the type of permit you are applying for and complete the training required and submit certification to the Department.

Applicants for a firearms permit must have completed training by a Department-approved certifier of at least 36 hours in the handling and use of the firearm. No examination is required, but an applicant must present a certificate from a Department-approved firearms proficiency certifier indicating that the applicant has successfully completed the training and is proficient in the care, handling and use of a specific type or types of firearms. The certificates to verify training are provided to approved certifiers by the Department, and contain the date, time of day, number of hours and the location where the training was completed. The permit to carry a firearm will be mailed to the agency which employs the individual trained and approved for the certificate of proficiency.

Common Denial Reason: History of criminal conviction. Federal laws prohibit convicted felons (unless pardoned) and some others from carrying a firearm. Convictions of crimes or pending charges may be grounds for denial of license if the circumstances of the conviction or charge are substantially related to professional practice.
